SCREENWRITING and FILMMAKING CLASSES ON MAUI - AUGUST and SEPTEMBER 2010

1) SO YOU WANNA MAKE A MOVIE? SCREENWRITING and FILM WORKSHOP: Part 1: Screenwriting

   Want to learn the art and craft of screenwriting? Want some tidbits to help your writing improve? This workshop focuses on Screenwriting Basics. Perfect for beginners - don't be shy - and even experienced filmmakers and writers will learn a lot. Please see testimonials to the right and many testimonials here.

Topics include:

* story basics * visual storytelling (and the huge difference between the novel and screenplay) * archetypes, the hero's journey * story structure * character * good vs. bad dialog/exposition * industry standard screenplay formatting -- and you will learn about free screenwriting software and have hands-on practice in proper formatting * we will touch on the business of screenwriting, how to copyright and register you screenplay, and steps to move your script into production

LOCATION: Temple of Peace, 575 Haiku Road, Haiku DATE: Saturday, September 4th Time: 1:30 - 6:30 pm REGISTRATION FEES: $75.00 (small fee for paypal), cash day of also accepted. Limited space: 20 people maximum. SPECIAL (additional, not required): Anyone taking this course can receive feedback of up to two scenes (up to five pages) of a screenplay for a class rate of $25.00. (Limited to 2 weeks after class ends.) Harriette will write on the pages and give corrections including re-writing samples correctly. It's a great way to see if you are headed in the right direction. EVERYONE taking this class will receive A LOT of additional resources after the class ends including audio and reading links for further learning.

2) SO YOU WANNA MAKE A MOVIE? SCREENWRITING and FILM WORKSHOP: Part 2 Filmmaking/Producing/Directing

   This class covers basic producing and directing with emphasis on NEW METHODS OF INDEPENDENT FUNDING/DISTRIBUTION and DIRECTING BASICS! One-Day Intensive. This is NOT a screenwriting class. This is an abbreviated film producing/directing class taught by Harriette to rave reviews -- details here -- for the aspiring filmmaker, videomaker, writer, producer, director, film lover, or anyone interested in filmmaking. The class will also will include info about film festivals such as Sundance (how to apply, how to prepare, how you can attend), and new paradigm shifting/crowdfunding models such as Kickstarter and IndieGogo -- and the changing landscape of distribution and free content in the internet age -- how do you make money on "free" anyway?

We will also watch Harriette's award-winning short film Baker's Men (distributed on Sundance Channel and on DVD with Spiritual Cinema Circle) to understand how the process from script-to-screen works (Pre-production to production to distribution to broadcast).

DATE: Sunday, Sept 5th Time: 1-6pm *Everyone attending this class will also receive a learning guide after class with many resources for further study and reference.

3) SO YOU WANNA MAKE A MOVIE? WEEKEND SCREENWRITING AND FILM WORKSHOP. YOU RECEIVE A DISCOUNT IF YOU SIGN UP IN ADVANCE FOR SCREENWRITING AND FILM WORKSHOP: PART 1 AND PART 2, ABOVE FEES: 140.00 total includes materials (fee for paypal). (Please note, Harriette's fees on Maui are 25% less than on mainland to accomodate Maui residents. If finances are a concern, Harriette is open to a trade if you have a service to offer, though this will only be accomodated after minimum attendence is met. Please contact her. 4) SCREENWRITING 101: THE BASICS WORKSHOP - CRASH COURSE - (INTENSIVE: 3 MEETINGS)

    Meets three times, includes in-between class assignments. You will learn a lot in our time together, have writing assignments, and get personalized hands-on feedback on your writing.
    This is a small salon class so you can get individual attention. 7 STUDENTS MAXIMUM! RESERVE YOUR SPOT! DATES: Sept 6, 7, 10 (Three Evenings (Monday, Tuesday, Friday) TIME: 6-9 pm (or 5:30--8:30 depending on people's schedules). LOCATION: Home in Makawao (address to follow). FEES: $200 plus $20 materials (you can share the materials if taking with someone). This is same class taught in Miami with excellent feedback. Please see details here. Please note: after class ends you will receive one more additional feedback on your screenwriting assignment to solidify the learning process.

We will also view Harriette’s award-winning short film “Baker’s Men” currently distributed by the Spiritual Cinema Circle on a DVD entitled “Raising Consciousness." You will see the screenplay and how it was manifested on the screen. You will understand, through this example, the process of “script to screen” in filmmaking.
